Julie’s Dandilion

Julie's Dandelion (Click image for closeup)

This one is a commissioned request by Julie Radcliffe Atallah of  Brusin Ales fame.  I highly recomend you visit her store if you’re ever in Asheville.

My understanding is that this rainbarrel will soon grace her uncle’s garden.

I _love_ these kinds delicate images. Sadly, my supplies of such decals are limited.

Cost: Undisclosed (SOLD)

Date Created: June 10, 2011

Description: 60 gallon terracotta barrel, Yellow dadilion.

Notes: The spigot and overflow holes are not drilled yet. I will do so on 6/16/2011.

 Flow Chakras

Flow Chakras (Click image for closeup)

Background story: I want to attend this year’s HoopPath Retreat. I mediated on hoops & the flow-arts, and three bits of inspiration came to mind. This is the third.

A “Chakra” is a concept referring to wheel-like vortices which, according to traditional Indian medicine, are said to be “force centers” or whorls of energy permeating, from a point on the physical body, the layers of the subtle bodies in an ever-increasing fan-shaped formation. (Thanks wikipedia!)

How could I _not_ reference chakras when reflecting on hooping?

Their are four chakras represented here – each corresponds to one of the Four Stages of Competence: Unconscious Incompetence, Conscious incompetence, Conscious competence, unconscious competence. You get to decide what patten represents which stage. ;-)

Cost: $150

Date Created: June 15, 2011

Description: 60 gallon terracotta barrel, Purple concentric dots, white flower-like mandala at bottom, green & blue dot at center, blue circles at top.

Notes: The spigot and overflow holes are not drilled yet, since a buyer may want them oriented in a specific place.

 Flower Over Golden Hoops

Flower Over Golden Hoops (Click image for closeup)

Background story: I want to attend this year’s HoopPath Retreat. I mediated on hoops & the flow-arts, and three bits of inspiration came to mind. This is the second.

To me, in context of flow-arts, the flower here symbolizes beauty found in hoopdance. Since hooping is a sport dominated by women – I decided pink should be the dominant color-scheme. (Go ahead and blame my cultural programming that associates certain colors with gender!!!)

Cost: $150

Date Created: June 15, 2011

Description: 60 gallon terracotta barrel, Pink Flower over three horizontal gold bands.

Notes: The spigot and overflow holes are not drilled yet, since a buyer may want them oriented in a specific place.

 HoopPath Flow

Description: 60 gallon terracotta barrel, white ribbon, blue flow-wave, pink button in top of ribbon

 The disclaimer post

Hello. My name is Paul – and I’ve been making decorated rainbarrels in Asheville, NC for two years. This blog is brand-new, so I wanted to start with a quick disclaimer:

I’m an artist*, a hula-hooper, and a public transit activist.

I mention this because I also want to also point out this list does not include “web designer”. If it did, you’d be looking at a super-slick rain-barrel website rather than a template WordPress blog. I beg your resourcefulness and forbearance as I work on this site to get it up and running smoothly.

I’ve put-off making a website for two reasons:

1) Until fairly recently, I thought this rainbarrel-business was a temporary thing. The Blissful Rainbarrel Company was  something that would soon be replaced with a “real” job. (Ah, remember when the US economy wasn’t in the tank? … Neither do I.) For the past 2 years I’ve been making excuses to not do the work of a sustainable company.

Surprisingly, however, I’ve actually been eking out a living doing this. Plus, last month I realized that I actualy get a lot of joy doing this – so it’s time to stop making excuses.

2) I’ve begun to master the rainbarrel-as-a-canvass concept, and I’d like to share my work with the world.

The date is June 16th, 2011. As of this post, I haven’t adjusted the side-bar settings, created a unique header – or most of the basics you’d expect to see in a blog. However, I’m impatient to start posting my work.

I’m gambling that if you like my work, you’ll be forgiving of this sites temporary shortcomings.

So, without further ado: Here are my barrels.

(PS: The barrel above is the first one I ever made back in 2009. :-)
